Being Artist, Artist Being: Fist Solo Exhibition

Exhibition Statement

This exhibition is about the experience of the artist from my own personal lived experience, a study of my place in society as an artist, and thinking of art as a mode of communication with the public.

The ideas explored are the relationships between the artist and both the models and the audience. Aiming to reveal the behind the scene of art making and the effort of the artist in finding their voice and place in the art world. And lastly, I explore the concept of art as the window between the private space of the artist and the public space.

I use performance as my primary medium in this body of work; this exhibition encompassed many videos of recorded performances and had a live interactive performance that was performed twice during the exhibition period.

Artist notes and reflection

This body of work encompassed both my most important works within this subject matter as well as new and process-based experimental tryouts some stronger than others yet amounting to a whole.

Framing my studio Series

This series was developed while thinking about the work of art as the window between the private and public space of the artist, in this case, the space studied is the bridge between the artist's studio and the public realm.

This series is composed two photographs both reinterpreting the studio space through sketches of the space one taking the negative flour space lines to reframe the studio and the other reproducing a cartoon light sketch through which the real studio is still distinguishable.

Accompanying those images and as a preliminary study is a 5 hours endurance performance, this performance was displayed on a miniature CRT Tv in the corner which also filled the space with its soundtrack encompassing the urban evening Sunscape and a few conversations with curious neighbours as the evening settles in. In this work, I think about erasure as a form of painting but also reveals the labor of art making.

This 40-minute-long performance was presented on two screens in alternative time viewings. This is my favourite presentation of this work.

This work is thinking about a painting as the window between the private space of the artist and the public space. This work is painted on my bedroom window with negative space silhouettes of my body through which the audience sees my daily routine of waking up and getting ready in the morning and getting ready for bed at night.

Within this body of work was also presented the Painting your body with my body Series.

I enjoyed viewing the performance in life-size projection emphasising the performance aspect and creating a greater connection between the actors in the video performance ( the artist and the models) and the audience within the gallery space.

This work is accompanied by a few prints available for sale.

Painting your body with my body:Touch was presented in a public space for the first time, I made a little corner for people to walk within and enjoy this performance in a more intimate space.

The Revealing the artist series was also part of this exhibition. The revealing the Artist interactive performance was performed twice.
